Old phone systems just don’t cut it anymore
We still come across merchants using phones that were set up years ago — some even still relying on wall sockets and switchboards.
They work (sort of), but they’re not built for how modern merchants run:
- Teams spread across yard, counter, and office
- Staff answering from mobiles or off-site
- Missed calls when it’s busy
Add the BT switch-off into the mix, and it’s clear: it’s time for something simpler.
What’s a cloud phone system – and why does it matter?
Cloud phones (also called VoIP) let you make and receive calls over the internet.
You can:
- Keep your existing numbers
- Use desk phones, mobiles, or even headsets
- Transfer calls between staff instantly
- Record messages, track missed calls, and more
For a busy merchant, it means fewer missed calls, clearer lines, and easier communication – whether you’re in the yard or on the road.
Why it works well for builders merchants
We’ve worked with lots of NMBS members to get them switched over – and here’s what they’ve said makes the biggest difference:
- Calls that can follow staff around (no more running to the office)
- Proper voicemail and out-of-hours messages
- No more “line’s down again” problems
- Easy to scale up when opening a new branch
One merchant told us: “We didn’t want loads of tech – just phones that work, wherever we are. That’s what we got.”
Things to watch out for when choosing a provider
Not all systems are created equal. If you’re looking at switching, here’s what to check:
- Do they offer UK-based support you can actually get hold of?
- Will they set everything up for you (so you’re not stuck figuring it out)?
- Can they work around your branch hours to avoid disruption?
- Are they familiar with how merchants operate?
(We’re biased, of course – but these are the things we’ve built our service around.)
Want to get ahead of the BT switch-off?
The PSTN shutoff is coming in January 2027 – and merchants who switch early are avoiding the last-minute rush.
If your phones feel overdue an upgrade, or you just want to avoid disruption later on, we’re always happy to chat.
We already support NMBS members across the UK with simple, reliable telecoms — no jargon, no hard sell.
